Eye Health

eye healthIn addition to regular, comprehensive eye exams from our independent Doctors of Optometry, quality lenses, and durable designer frames, your diet can have a significant impact upon your eye health. Some studies even show that eating foods that are beneficial to eye health can even reduce the risk of some age-related vision diseases like macular degeneration by up to 25%. While you may have heard that carrots and fish oil capsules are the secret to good eye health, there are a few more foods you should eat regularly to keep your vision in tip-top shape.

1. Go Green

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends lots of green leafy vegetables, red fruits like berries, and whole grains for maintaining good eye health. While the thought of munching on kale does little for some of us, a smoothie can be a great way to sneak in a few servings of those eye-healthy fruits and vegetables. For instance, a morning smoothie consisting of spinach, kale, chard, peaches, strawberries, avocado, almond milk, and a little ginger can deliver a powerhouse of nutrient-dense energy to your body while also providing your eyes with lutein and zeaxanthin – two nutritive compounds that can reduce your risk of macular degeneration.

2. Go Fish

Skip the deep-fried, mystery fish and chips and opt for two servings per week of Omega-3-rich grilled mackerel, Bluefin tuna, or salmon. Omega-3 fatty acids not only do wonders for your vision, but they can also help protect the heart. It’s important to look for fresh, wild-caught cuts of fish as these will have less lead and mercury than farmed fish products.

3. Go Nuts

Full of healthy fats, Vitamin E, and selenium, nuts are a great snack that can help keep age-related vision diseases at bay. Almonds, Brazil nuts, and cashews are all great sources of the nutrients your eyes need to keep functioning at their best.

4. Say No to Trans Fats

On the other end of the spectrum are foods that aren’t so great for your eyes. Avoid foods that are deep-fried, high in cholesterol, or high in harmful trans fats.
