3 Tips for Better Eye Health

3 Easy Ways to Improve Your Eye Health Right Now

It’s no secret that regular check-ups with your eye doctor are the most important factor to eye health. But with technology plays a larger and larger role in our every day lives, there’s another eye condition you may be dealing with, too – eye fatigue. How do you recognize eye fatigue? Answer these quick questions:

  • Are you rubbing your eyes often throughout the day?
  • Do you find yourself closing your eyes for a quick moments because they don’t feel “right?”
  • Are you having a hard time focusing your eyes on what’s in front of you?
  • Do digital displays and screens start to look blurry after a while?

If you answered “yes,” to any of these questions, eye fatigue may be to blame.

Spending loads of time staring at a phone, tablet, computer, or monitor can be hard on your eyes. In addition to the blue light, staring at a screen can lead to dry, fatigued, achy eyes. So what can you do? Here are 3 simple ways you can shake away eye fatigue and improve your eye health right now.

1. Stay Healthy

Good stuff in, good stuff out. Eating foods that are good for you and staying hydrated starts a sort of healthy domino effect that can improve your vision. Healthy blood pressure and hydration, specifically, can help the muscles in and around your eyes move better and with less straining. Dark leafy greens are a great way to take in the essential nutrients your eyes need to thrive.

Are you getting your 8 hours every night? Another big contributor to eye fatigue is poor sleep. Whether it’s a matter of going to bed earlier, winding down earlier, or investing in better pillows and beds, a good night’s sleep can lift your health all around.

2. Ready, Set, BLINK

Go ahead and blink right now. Nice, right? Blinking lubricates the surface of the eyes and you should be naturally doing it about every 6 or 8 seconds. If you’re stuck staring at a screen, however, you could be going much longer than 8 seconds without blinking – even up to 1 minute! Lack of blinking means lack of moisture which means an increased risk of dryness and irritation. More blinking = better eye health.

In addition to blinking, refocusing your eyes every now and again is extremely helpful in combating eye strain and fatigue. Try the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, for 20 seconds, stare at an object that’s 20 feet away. This allows your eye muscles to get away from straining in a single position for long periods of time.

3. Treat Yourself

Your eyes are precious! Be sure you’re taking time to pamper them just like you would your nails or muscles. While there’s no such thing as an eye massage, there are a few things you can do to give yourself a little ocular R&R:

  • Put your phone away early, and limit screen time as much as possible right before bed.
  • Apply rose water to your eyes at night with a cotton pad.
  • Find a nice, comfortable sleep mask to wear to bed.
  • Try letting cucumber slices or tea bags sit on your eyes as you lie down and decompress.
